BBC One thriller The Pact hit big when it arrived on screens last year, and now the show is returning - but in a very different form.

The new season will see the series tell a whole new story with a brand-new cast, with the few remaining factors being the Welsh setting, a focus on secrets and lies and returning series creator Pete McTighe.

The season will also see the return of Rakie Ayola, who appeared in the first season but will be playing an entirely different character in this new run.

The cast also includes Elizabeth Berrington (The Nevers), Lisa Palfrey (Line of Duty), Christian Patterson (In My Skin), Matthew Gravelle (Keeping Faith), Aaron Anthony (Behind Her Eyes) and Jacob Ifan (A Discovery of Witches).

Ayola previously teased the potential for additional seasons of the show, telling Digital Spy: "If you think about it, you could have a series where the world blows up and there's nothing left except a blade of grass and if someone wanted to get 17 years out of it, they could.

"But as it is... it's so beautifully formed. So you never know. We shouldn't jinx it. These six episodes are worth investing in because they are fantastic and there really is a story that goes from A to Z."

Teasingly, Rakie also stated, "We might be here in 20 years talking about it. Who knows?" Read on for everything you need to know about The Pact season 2.

A second season of The Pact, featuring a brand new story and cast, was confirmed earlier this year, with the show becoming an anthology about secrets and their destructive power.

Returning star and executive producer Rakie Ayola said in a statement: "I'm thrilled to be working again with Little Door and BBC Wales leading this talented cast to bring Pete's wonderfully mysterious story to life.

"As an Exec Producer on this series, it's hugely important to me to see the wealth of opportunity this production is offering both to established talent and those new to the industry both behind and in front of camera."

The show's creator Pete McTighe is best known outside of The Pact for his work on Doctor Who, for which he recently said he has "dozens" more ideas.

The Pact season 2 will see creator Pete McTighe return to tell a wholly new story, while the other big returnee is actress Rakie Ayola.

Here she will be playing a different character than in season 1, as the new run of episodes follows Ayola's social worker Christine, and explores how her family's loyalties are tested when they’re confronted by a stranger. Christine’s family including oldest son Will (Lloyd Everitt), youngest son Jamie (Aaron Anthony) and daughter Megan (Mali Ann Rees), are trying to get on with their lives after the recent tragic death of their brother Liam.

Their lives begin to unravel when a stranger, Connor (Jordan Wilks), arrives in town claiming a connection that nobody could have imagined. As buried secrets come to light, they must consider who they are and grapple with morality and divided loyalty. As their lives spiral out of control, a terrible pact may be all that can save them.
